Leonard Sweet is the Founder and President of SpiritVenture Ministries (SVM), in 1995 Len launched Sweet’s SoulCafe, a
spirituality newsletter for postmoderns that was purchased by Broadman&Holman Publishing. Current projects include a biography of Phoebe Palmer in the American religion biography series, a textbook on preaching entitled Giving Blood, The Leadership Myth (with Joseph R. Myers), and Pay Attention:
Every Bush is Burning. Len is also working on his fi rst novel (A Postmodern Pilgrim’s Progress), and a multi-media leadership resource yet untitled. Author of more than one hundred articles, 600 published sermons and thirty books, Leonard is currently working on two textbooks: one on preaching and one on evangelism. His most recent books are The Gospel According to Starbucks, The Church of the Perfect Storm, 11 Indispensable Relationships You Can’t Be Without, and early in 2009, So Beautiful: Divine Design for Life and the Church. In both 2006 and 2007, Len has been voted by his peers as “One of the 50 Most Infl uential Christians in America” as polled by ChurchReport magazine.

Rev. Jorge Acevedo of the Florida Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church will proudly be featured
as the keynote speaker for the 2008 Bishop’s School of Ministry being held at the Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle
Beach September 9-12. Acevedo was the 2001 recipient of the Denman Evangelism Award from the Florida Annual
Conference of the United Methodist Church and was named the Distinguished Alumni of the Year at Asbury Theological
Seminary. He serves on the Southeastern Jurisdiction and Florida Conference Episcopal Committees.
Co-author of the book, The Heart of Youth Ministry, published by Bristol Books in 1989, he has also written for
the United Methodist Publishing House, Circuit Rider magazine, Good News magazine and Our Faith Today. He was
also one of three featured pastors on the Keeping the Passion for Ministry Alive edition of the Willow Creek Association
Defining Moments CD with Bill Hybels.
Acevedo is the Lead Pastor at Grace Church in Cape Coral, Florida. Grace Church has grown in its weekend
attendance from 400 to over 2400 in the past twelve years and is recognized as having one of the largest and most
effective recovery ministries in America.

(Anon): I was not able to attend the event. What major change or reinforcement did the attending clergy take away from this. (09/18/08)

(Anon): I am not sure all the clergy took the same things away, and I really can't speak for anyone other than myself, but I believe some came away with a new outlook on there ministry. Others with just some new ideas about how to get there congregations involved. (09/19/08)

Hurricane Response

            In response to the two named storms having the potential to adversely affect the southeast coastline within the next week, the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church is gearing up its “Flood Bucket” aid program.
            A Flood Bucket’s inventory is designed to provide flood victims with items desperately needed to clean houses damaged by floodwaters.
            To fund future relief efforts, The United Methodist Conference Center in Columbia is accepting flood bucket donations. The cost to equip a flood bucket is $50. Checks can be made payable to the Conference Treasurer and can be sent to 4908 Colonial Drive Columbia, SC 29203. Please note on the check that it is for Flood Buckets.
            Contributors may also assemble their own, fully stocked “flood buckets” and deliver them to the Columbia conference center.  A flood bucket inventory is listed below.

FLOOD BUCKET   Kit Content (Value approximately $50)
 
* 5­gallon bucket with re-sealable lid
* Bleach (two 1­quart or one 82 oz. bottle. Do not include bleach if you are shipping the bucket through the US Postal Service, UPS or FedEx)
* 5 scouring pads
* 7 sponges
* 1 scrub brush
* 18 cleaning towels (reusable wipes)
* Liquid laundry detergent (two 25 oz. or one 50 oz. bottle)
* 1 household cleaner, 12­16 oz. bottle
* Disinfectant dish soap, 16­28 oz. bottle
* 50 clothes pins
* Clothesline (two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.)
* 5 dust masks
* 2 pair latex gloves
* 1 pair work gloves
* 24­bag roll of heavy­duty trash bags, 33­45 gallon (remove roll from box before placing in bucket)
* 1 insect repellant spray, 6­14 oz. can (If aerosol cans they must have protective caps. See
Special Requirements below)
* 1 air freshener, 8 or 9 oz. can (If aerosol cans they must have protective caps. See Special
Requirements below)
Note: If the requested item size is not available, go down to the next available size. If nothing is available in the requested or smaller size, put masking tape on the outside of the bucket saying, “This bucket contains no ______________.”

Important Kit Assembly Information
• All items in kits must be NEW items.
• Do NOT include any personal notes, money or additional materials in the kits. These things must be painstakingly removed and will delay the shipment.

Bishop J. Lawrence McCleskey retired today. McCleskey is closing out 45 years of ministry in the United Methodist Church. He spent the last 12 years as a Bishop. South Carolina was honored to have Bishop McCleskey from 1996 to 2004. McCleskey then spent 2004 to 2008 as the Bishop for the Western North Carolina Conference, which was his home conference.
