Up to the Neck

I just read a Desert Fathers story about a brother who was wrongly accused by his fellow monks.  He fled to Abba Anthony, but his brothers followed him to argue their case.  Another abba listened and then said, "There was a man by a river who was stuck in the mud up to his knees.  His friends came to help him and in the process, pushed him down into the mud up to his neck."

I hear in this story a cautionary word.  In our zeal to be helpful, sometimes we can make things worse, it seems.

Happy New Year!
