Lima Bean
I haven't been posting because I've had an upset stomach and I feel terrible. I don't function well when I don't feel good. My cousin and I are known in our family for being a "tomato skin" and a "lima bean." The joke is that when you touch us, we bruise.
Then last night I was talking with a friend of mine. She has a five-year-old daughter who was born with a less-than-functional digestive tract. They are currently trying to get her functioning properly so that she doesn't have to live with constant stomach pain. And yet the cure is almost as bad as the problem. Every night for a couple of months now, she has had to drink "nasty medicine" (her name for it) that keeps her in the bathroom throughout the night. The poor child is now falling asleep in her kindergarten class. The worst of the story is that it isn't really working.
So when she heard her mama say, "I'm sorry you've been sick," she wanted to know, "What's wrong with Mrs. Kathy? What's wrong?" And my answer was a stomach ache. No big deal to her. She lives with one.
Talk about a dose of perspective. Today I salute all those who live with constant pain and quietly go about their lives, enduring.
