Family Trip to the Capitol
School starts next week. So we have taken this week to have our last hurrah of the summer. We are in Washington DC for our first-ever family trip here.
Here are some things I learned yesterday:
1-Arlington Cemetary began when one Union officer decided that if there were Union soldiers buried in Robert E. Lee's yard, then his family would not come back to live there.
2-Mary Custis Lee, wife of Robert, was the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington.
3-The former household slaves of Arlington House provided information that helped in the accuracy of restoration.
4-The best monuments to see at night are the Jefferson and the Lincoln Memorials.
5-It's a bit disconcerting to be on a tour bus when the engine stops cold and you are in the middle of an intersection. But it becomes quite a family adventure once you are safely back at the hotel.
Soon we're off to the museums. Fun family time!
